{"id":22407,"date":"2023-06-05T14:21:08","date_gmt":"2023-06-05T12:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/demdlx704as001.ad.harman.com\/?p=22407"},"modified":"2024-06-24T05:50:01","modified_gmt":"2024-06-24T03:50:01","slug":"microphone-calibration-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/audioworx.transfunnel.co\/old\/?p=22407","title":{"rendered":"Microphone Calibration"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The purpose of microphone calibration is to convert the soundcard input values, which are typically within the range of +\/- 1 (full scale FS), to the actual sound pressure level that is captured by the connected microphone.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve this, a calibration device, such as a pistonphone, is connected to the microphone. This device produces a constant sine tone with a predetermined level, such as 94 or 114 dB.<\/p>\n<p>The level of the microphone signal is measured by the RTA, and the calibration level can be saved for future measurements.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29279\" src=\"https:\/\/audioworx.transfunnel.co\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/MicrophoneCalibration_001.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"659\" height=\"393\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"text\"><strong>Prerequisites<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In the Analyzer Settings connect the SoundIn channels to the Analyzer inputs.<\/li>\n<li>Set the \u201cPeak Hold RMS\u201d to \u201cOff\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>Set the \u201cFreq Weight RMS\u201d to flat (important if the calibration frequency is not 1 kHz).<\/li>\n<li>Set the \u201cSound Level Meter\u201d to Slow.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-23180 \" src=\"https:\/\/audioworx.transfunnel.co\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/MC_01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1158\" height=\"671\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Steps to perform microphone calibration:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Navigate to the <strong>IVP RTA<\/strong> tab and select <strong>Microphone Calibration<\/strong> from the ribbon bar. This opens the Calibration dialogue box.<\/li>\n<li>In the Calibration box, adjust the channel that needs to be calibrated and click <strong>Reset<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-29356 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/audioworx.transfunnel.co\/old\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/RTA_CalibrationView.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"621\" height=\"313\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Select the desired unit. Usually the unit of measurement is dBSPL, but for electrical measurements dBV is selected. The selected unit will be applied to all subsequent channels.<\/li>\n<li>Attach the calibration device.<\/li>\n<li>Wait until the &#8220;Measured&#8221; value has stabilized, and then click on <strong>Apply<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>(Optional) Select the Compensation File. This file is provided by the microphone manufacturer and is used to correct the microphone&#8217;s frequency response. You can On or Off this correction using the adjacent checkbox. To take the selected compensation file into effect, please restart the analyzer.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p class=\"note\">You don&#8217;t need to click on &#8220;Apply&#8221; for selecting a compensation file. &#8220;Reset&#8221; will only reset the offset; it has no impact on calibration file.<\/p>\n<p class=\"note\">The compensation file is only considered for magnitude curve correction; it has no impact on calculated metrics such as sound pressure level (SPL) and total harmonic distortion (THD).<\/p>\n<p>The calibration result is automatically stored in the analyzer settings. They can be modified manually at any time.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, you can export and import files with calibrated microphones.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It is possible to import XML\/JSON files with calibrated microphones exported from MMIR\u00a0 and IVP\/RTA.<\/li>\n<li>It is possible to export and import JSON files with Channel Number, Offset and mic compensation file of the calibrated microphones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The purpose of microphone calibration is to convert the soundcard input values, which are typically within the range of +\/- 1 (full scale FS), to the actual sound pressure level that is captured by the connected microphone.
